Illustration Workshop 2018
Saturday, November 17th at KAPOW! Art Studio
9-4pm (Lunch break 12-1) | Ages 16+, Adults
An illustration is a decoration, interpretation or visual explanation of a text, concept or process, designed for integration in published media, such as posters, flyers, magazines, books, teaching materials, animations, video games and films.
Learn the nuts and bolts of the creative process as it pertains to creating illustrations for print media. Artist/Illustrator Rich Harrington will take you through the various steps in the creative process that will open your mind, challenge your creativity, teach you technical skills and test your ability to tie them all together in a dynamic, cohesive and successful illustration.
Rich worked as a designer and illustrator for major advertising agencies and design firms on the east coast. He will share his experiences with the class in terms of creative problem solving, assessing a client’s needs, and using metaphor and symbolism. We start off with a few exercises to get the creative juices flowing, followed by a real-world assignment. We’ll submit thumbnails to the group, then work-up sketches based on creative feedback.
The afternoon session will consist of a demonstration using colored pencil on Bristol board. Students will take the rest of the class period to begin their final piece with individual attention/feedback. We end with a brief discussion of where illustrations are used and how to develop a style that could lead to freelance opportunities.
